College Audition Prep at PYT
Is your child preparing to apply for Musical Theater BFA programs in college? The process has become extremely competitive and quite complex, and most students applying for elite programs will require expert guidance. Our professional staff is prepared to help your child every step of the way. Most students should begin preparing early in their Junior year of high school. Our staff will guide your child in the following areas:
Selecting the Right Program
Which musical theater program is a good fit for your child? Our staff will help your child make a list of programs that span the range from safety schools to reach programs. We will assist your child in establishing a timeline and determining the requirements for each individual program (as they are all different).Selection of and Coaching of Appropriate Vocal Material
Most programs will require two contrasting vocal pieces, and material should not be overused or unrealistic for the student presenting it. Students should be extremely well-rehearsed, exhibiting excellent technique and superior story-telling ability.Selection of and Coaching of Appropriate Monologues
Most programs will require two to three 60-90 second monologues (dramatic, comedic, classical/Shakespeare). Selected material should come from existing plays and should suit a student’s strengths. Students are expected to be impeccably prepared and will work with our staff to break down each monologue.Choreography for and Coaching of Appropriate Dance Material
Most programs will require a dance pre-screen and in-person dance audition. For the pre-screen, our staff will provide your child with an original piece of jazz choreography that suits his/her/their skill level (and ballet if the program requires or requests it). While most programs do not expect students to demonstrate mastery in dance, it is extremely important to be an ‘excellent mover’ and show competence in dance.Preparation for and Filming of Pre-Screens
A ‘pre-screen’ is a filmed submission of a student exhibiting his/her/their skills, and most programs require one. Submissions will be in acting, singing, and dancing. We will provide students with studio space, professional lighting and backdrops, and (most importantly) the right material and preparation for their pre-screens. Once a university receives a student’s pre-screen, the student will hopefully receive an invitation for a live audition.Coaching for Live Auditions
Once a student makes it past the ‘pre-screen’, he/she/they will be invited for a live audition. Students must be prepared for the pressure of this very important final step in the application process.Review of Written Statements
Students will be required to complete written statements for each program, and these statements should be well-written and original. Our staff can provide feedback as well as assistance with the technical writing element (grammar, structure, etc.).
Students will work privately with experts in their respective fields for all elements of the audition preparation process. Rates are as follows:
30-minute lessons - $50
60-minute lessons - $90
